With Virgin Atlantic's first-ever "Retreat Suites" and Lie-flat Seats with Closing Doors, this New Aircraft elevates flying to new heights

Flying Virgin Atlantic has never been more advantageous. The airline now flies its most technologically sophisticated plane to London’s Heathrow Airport on selected flights from Boston, Miami, and Atlanta, as well as daily service between New York-JFK and Tampa after acquiring four A330neo-900 aircraft last fall.

Travelers value the trip itself as much as their ultimate location. As a result, they made sure the interior of their new plane was luxurious. Every cabin has been outfitted with custom fabrics, extra storage, high-speed Wi-Fi, and the newest entertainment system.

“This is our best experience nose to tail,” Corneel Koster, Virgin Atlantic’s chief customer and operating officer, proclaimed at a showcase for the new aircraft recently, according toTravel + Leisure. All cabins, not just business class, benefit from the plane’s upgrades, making the flight experience more pleasant and convenient for everyone.

Naturally, the best seats are in business class, which Virgin Atlantic refers to as Upper Class, where they’ve unveiled a new suite. The first ever fully-closing doors on a lie-flat seat are now available on the airline, elevating the new first-class suites to the level of other premium carriers. Since the walls don’t reach the ceiling, the 1-2-1 arrangement of the suites still gives an individual cubicle vibe. However, with higher walls surrounding each suite, deployable privacy screens, and flexibility for both leisure and business travelers to fly together, the cabin provides greater levels of privacy.

Each Upper-Class suite will feature an 18.5” in-flight entertainment screen, the largest ever offered, and as the inaugural feature, passengers will be able to connect to the in-flight entertainment system wirelessly via Bluetooth. There are two USB ports and a universal AC outlet in each First-Class suite.

Upper Class passengers can mingle in a communal area of the cabin known as the Loft, which features a bar stocked with low to non-alcoholic drinks, along with a self-service ice cream freezer. Passengers can gather to watch content on a 32-inch touchscreen monitor with eight Bluetooth audio jacks. It can accommodate eight passengers, which is more than the current five seated and three standing social areas. The Loft’s new seat belts allow passengers to remain seated in case of an emergency, such as severe turbulence.

The new Retreat Suites, however, have been called the cabin’s “standout feature” byT+L. The two suites in the front row are the largest of all the Upper-Class accommodations. The ottoman at the base of the seat can be used as an additional seat, and the tray table makes it possible to eat with a travel companion as if you were sitting at a real table rather than in an airplane seat. Only Upper-Class customers can book the Retreat Suites, which can be done beginning 14 days prior to departure at a cost of £200 per seat.

The addition of wireless charging stations, though there are also USB ports and power outlets, is another significant upgrade for Virgin Atlantic’s premium economy service, Upper Class and Premium. Additionally, you can use your wireless headphones to watch movies on the in-flight entertainment systems throughout the entire plane thanks to Bluetooth connectivity.

Virgin Atlantic has worked to improve all classes, as economy has made significant advancements as well.

“With economy, we’ve actually uplifted screen size to 13.3-inch monitors, so it’s a really healthy screen size compared to other economy offerings on the market,” Henry Buckley, Virgin Atlantic’s senior manager of experience design noted. By comparison, Virgin Atlantic’s A350 aircraft has 11.6-inch screens in the economy cabin. “And again, we have that Bluetooth connectivity, so at every seat, you can connect your headsets there,” he added.

In addition to its revolutionary cabin design, the A330neo-900 is Virgin Atlantic’s most fuel-efficient aircraft, consuming 11% less fuel than its competitors. (The plane’s fuel efficiency is helped in part by the absence of leather within it; a synthetic alternative was used instead, which is lighter and more durable.) Today, four A330neo-900s are in service for Virgin Atlantic, but the company has placed an order for a total of 16.
