Trusted flyer programs TSA PreCheck and Clear are working to streamline the process for travelers into one application.

The U.S. Transportation Security Administration is reportedly working on a single application where travelers can simultaneously apply for TSA PreCheck and Clear.

According to The Point Guys, TSA is working with Clear, and the information technology company, Telos, to create the application. The outlet asked a representative from both agencies if the rumors of May being the time of availability for the application were true.

The spokesperson confirmed the application was in progress, but there has yet to be a date when it will be available to the public.

“TSA will authorize Telos and Clear as TSA PreCheck enrollment providers when each is ready to begin operations, and there is no established date for either enrollment provider at this time,” per an agency spokesperson. “Telos and Clear will join Idemia in time, but any discussion about timeframes and how they each will go to market is entirely premature.”

TSA PreCheck is a must-have for avid travelers. It is a “federal Trusted Traveler Program that enables enrolled members to go through an expedited security line at airports.” Clear is a “private service offering an expedited experience at airports, stadiums, concerts, and more.” Clear offers gate escorts at some airports. Telos is the technology company working with TSA to support the dual applications.

The steps to combine the application have been in the works since last year. TSA Modernization Act and the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018 provided the partnership with its guidelines and requirements. The Points Guy stated that Clear and PreCheck have more than 14 million members, with TSA PreCheck membership growing to 14.3 million in 2022, representing a 27% growth from 2021, per the analysis.

The outlet shared the opinion of travel analyst Josh Reilly, who suggested the merger will benefit Clear more if they adopt PreCheck’s methods for trusted travelers. A TSA PreCheck spokesperson echoed Reilly’s statement, alluding to the application progress wavering on Clear aligning with PreCheck’s practices.

“Clear has been on a mission to make experiences safer and easier since day one, so we’re looking forward to becoming an authorized TSA PreCheck enrollment provider to help bring TSA PreCheck enrollment to more people in more places,” the spokesperson said. “Once Clear successfully meets all TSA requirements to become an enrollment provider and completes a trial period, Clear will be approved by TSA to begin offering TSA PreCheck enrollment services to the public at select locations using Clear pods.”

Travelers can apply for TSA PreCheck at TSA.gov and Clear at Clearme.com.
