Habari gani! Today begins Kwanzaa, a holiday based on African harvest traditions. Learn Kwanzaa's seven principles on this episode of U-Turn.

Habari gani! That greeting may be familiar to you if you celebrate Kwanzaa. Today is the first day of Kwanzaa, an annual African-American celebration that takes place from December 26th to January 2nd. It is celebrated by many families in the United States and is based on the harvest traditions of various parts of Africa. The seven days of Kwanzaa center around seven principles: Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-determination), Ujima (Collective work and responsibility, Ujamaa (Cooperative economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity) and Imani (Faith). In this week’s U-Turn video, host Suzette Webb taps into today’s Kwanzaa principle (Umoja/Unity) to share an inspirational travel quote by one of the greatest African-American authors, Dr. Maya Angelou. Get motivated to leave your comfort zone and plan that trip you have been dreaming about!
