Diamond Brown’s skin care line, inspired by her late-husband, is designed to provide high-quality and luxury products for underserved skin types.

When packing for any vacation or getaway, Black folks’ list of essentials is usually more extensive than cute outfits and basic toiletries. Because of specific hair and skin care needs, the lotions, body washes and scrubs, and hair products provided in hotel rooms don’t always cut it. Diamond Brown, however, is working to change this.

Brown is the founder of Diamond’s Skin Care, whose mission is to create hydrating, plant-based body care products made with simple ingredients for underserved skin types. The company was founded in 2008 after Brown’s husband, Darrell, was diagnosed with cancer. Darrell’s treatments consisted of post-surgery radiation and chemotherapy, which left his skin feeling dry, tight and inflamed, all of which caused extreme discomfort.

Brown couldn’t find any products on the market that helped with her husband’s harsh skin conditions and decided to create her own skin care formula to help soothe, moisturize and hydrate Darrell’s skin. Unfortunately, Darrell passed away, but Brown was encouraged to create her brand in his honor after connecting with other cancer patients.

“After my husband passed away, I actually stopped making products,” Brown told Travel Noire in a Q&A. “I thought to myself, ‘What’s the use?’ I was making [the products] for him. However, I had met several cancer patients and nurses, that I had given samples of my products to, begin to call me saying they wanted to buy, and my products were making a drastic difference on their skin.”

Once she decided to take the leap and create Diamond’s Body Care, Brown began to pivot her business strategy, targeting the hospitality and travel industries. Today, Brown’s skin care line can be found in Charlotte, Flint and Detroit airports.

“I was part of a collaboration where several minority-owned products were put into a couple of stores in the airport,” Brown said. “I, then, reached out to the airport retailer [to ask] if I could have my products expanded into other states. They said yes because my botanical body oil was the number one selling product amongst every other brand [in the initial collaboration]. They are now placing my products in five more stores throughout the U.S.”

Diamond’s Body Care is getting even more mainstream exposure, as the brand has partnered with JW Marriott and will be available in all Marriott hotels within the Charlotte area.

“JW Marriott was holding a Kentucky Derby Rooftop Party,” Brown said. “I emailed them asking if my company could participate in setting up a table and selling my products. I received an email response instantly, saying no, we don’t think that’s a good idea; however, we are interested in carrying your line in our spa. They now use my products exclusively for spa treatments and retail.”

What was born out of tragedy and grief is now helping so many others to feel seen, valued and worthy of a high-quality, luxury skin care experience. Brown continues to honor her husband, not only through the brand’s creation, but by donating 10% of proceeds to cancer survivors.
