With three Super Bowl wins in the last five years, Kansas City is on a winning streak. From art galleries to jazz venues and fine BBQ, here’s what to do in KC.

Love them or hate them, the Kansas City Chiefs continue to reiterate their status as the top team in the NFL. Last night, the Missouri team brought the Vince Lombardi Trophy back to KC after clinching a win in a nail-biting matchup between the San Francisco 49ers during Super Bowl 58 in Las Vegas. The win marks back-to-back victories for Kansas City after their win against the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023.

The Kansas City team have had an impressive run in the last five years; Super Bowl 58 marked the team’s fourth trip to the NFL’s biggest game, three of which they came out on top. The team, helmed by head coach Andy Reid and three-time MVP Patrick Mahomes, also cemented themselves as the seventh team in NFL history to win at least four Super Bowls. They join the ranks of the New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers and New York Giants, according to the NFL.

Kick it into overtime

The road to victory wasn’t an easy one – for the fans or the teams. Super Bowl 58 was a rematch between the 49ers and Chiefs, as the latter defeated the Bay Area team in 2020. San Fran was clearly hungry for a win and defense was the name of their game. By halftime, the most KC could muster was a field goal, bringing the 49ers to a 10-3 lead. By the fourth quarter, though, the two teams were tied and the game went into overtime. (This marked the second time a Super Bowl game surpassed the standard four quarters.) The 49ers clinched the lead again with an early field goal, bringing the score to 22-19, before Mahomes shifted into high-gear and hurled a three-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Mecole Hardman. The night ended with the Chiefs defeating the 49ers – again – 25-22.

Things to do in KCMO

Many hold the preconceived notion that there’s nothing but flat farmland and little reason to travel to the Midwest. But with three Super Bowl wins in the last five years, Kansas City is on a winning streak. Whether you’re a football diehard or BBQ enthusiast, here are some things to do in this city of champions.

Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl Victory Parade

Celebrate Kansas City’s win with fellow fans and players at the upcoming Super Bowl Victory Parade. KMBC reports that while the official route hasn’t yet been released by the city, there’s a good chance that it could resemble that of 2023’s parade, which mimicked 2020’s. Last year’s parade began on 6th Street in downtown KCMO before cruising down the length of downtown on Grand Boulevard and ending at Union Station on Pershing Road.

Jazz in KC

If music is your vibe, KC’s got you covered. Jazz roots run deep in Kansas City and patrons can get their fix by going to the American Jazz Museum, or by listening to live music at The Green Lady Lounge or the Phoenix

Artsy Things to Do in KC

If the visual arts are more your thing, Kansas City has multiple (free!) art museums including the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, 21C Museum Hotel, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art. Also, check out a show at The Black Repertory Theatre of Kansas City or Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey, the second iteration of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.

Eat and Drink in KC

You can’t leave Kansas City without trying the BBQ! Kansas City BBQ is renowned and arguably the best in the world (according to KC natives, but Memphis, Texas and St. Louis would also like a word).

When it comes to KC BBQ there’s even an app for that, where the Kansas City tourist board curates your dining experience. Tourists can’t go wrong with Gates BBQ, but more experienced KC BBQ fans recommend visitors try Joe’s Kansas City BBQ.

Beer and BBQ are the perfect pair and luckily for lovers of craft beers, Kansas City has a plethora of breweries to choose from. Vine Street Brewing, in particular, not only has an extensive list of beers, but it’s also the first Black-owned brewery in Missouri.

Black-Owned Businesses in KC

Don’t forget to “buy Black” before you go. There are a handful of Black-owned businesses in KC, two of which were featured on National Geographic’s 2023 film “Black Travel Across America:” Ruby Jean’s Juicery and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. Others include Urban Cafe, Arthur Bryant’s BBQ, The AI Hub, and Natasha Ria Art Gallery.
