After a recent shark attack in Hawaii, stay on the shore and play it safe by visiting one of these Black-owned businesses in the Aloha State.

No one ever thinks their fun day at the beach will end with a shark attack.

Unfortunately, that was the outcome for a man swimming in Hawaii’s Anaehoomalu Bay.

The 60-year-old man went for a swim on Sunday and was attacked by a shark. According to CNN, around 12:40 p.m. HST, a shark attacked the man while he was swimming just 200 yards offshore.

The man was pulled to safety by a catamaran crew after he escaped the shark. After being transported to a local hospital, the man was treated for “bites on his left hand and the back of his left leg.”

Although the man’s injuries weren’t fatal, and the probability of shark attacks is low, they do happen. According to the University of Florida’s International Shark Attack File, there were 57 unprovoked bites in 2022. Hawaii reported six unprovoked bites and five provoked bites, one fatal.

Shark attacks can happen in the ocean’s deep waters or as close as 100 feet from the shore.

If the potential run-in with a Great White is enough to scare you out of the water, here are a few Black businesses to support on the mainland of the Aloha State. All business bios are courtesy of Trippin.World.
