Check out these three simple steps to travel on a budget.

Is it possible to frequently travel the world while making less than six figures? The answer is: absolutely. Our travel journeys began while we were in graduate school. As students we were making less than $35,000 annually, and during that time we traveled to over 20 countries.

It was all made possible with a few steps that you can also follow.

Step 1: Be flexible with your travel dates and location.

If you are traveling as a student or while working a full-time job, you’ll need to know when you can travel. Check out the holiday calendar and see what days you are already given off, and plan your vacation around these dates. Adjusting your flight departure and arrival dates by a couple of days can save you significant money.

Now you have a timeline leading up to your vacation. Use this as a guideline to start planning out a budget. How many days do you have to save? The further in advance you plan, the more time you’ll have to gather your travel funds.

Step 2: Choose an affordable destination.

The easiest way to find affordable deals is by being flexible about when and where you go. We don’t always get to pick the destination; the cheapest flights pick for us, and travel deals determine the rest.

Keep in mind that there is more than one place to experience mesmerizing beaches and amazing waterfalls. Choose a location that offers both high-value experiences and low costs.

Step 3: Complete your travel budget.

Now that you have selected the most affordable destination for the dates you are able to travel, it’s time to start saving that money!

After booking flights, it’s time to assess the price of accommodations, food, and activities. You’ll be able to save in at least one of these areas depending on your travel style and budget. Create a dedicated travel savings account, and make consistent contributions.
